In the ASCII bracket above, there are 8 teams. The tournament starts with the quarterfinals. Each matchup is win-or-go-home—if you lose, you’re out. For example, Thunder Hawks play against Black Stallions. Thunder Hawks win, so they move on to the semifinals, and Black Stallions are eliminated. The same thing happens in every match. Winners advance to the next round, while losing teams are eliminated from the tournament.

After the quarterfinals, four teams remain and move on to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals then advance to the final round. In the final, the last two teams face each other to decide the champion. In this example, Falcon wins the final match and becomes the tournament champion.
